How to create the perfect log stove fire this winter

Cosy by the log stove fire

There is nothing more warming and relaxing, than cosying up in a thick pair of socks and a chunky blanket, with a warm mug of tea and spending time in front of a log stove fire with a flickering glow.

Heating your home using a log stove fire can be a cost-effective method in comparison to regular gas central heating and especially where you have access to good quality firewood. Log stoves are designed to retain the heat and can keep a room warm, long after the fire has faded out.

Choosing your logs

The types of logs you choose to ignite a flame and bring the hearth to light, can make a big difference. A stove fire is best started with small pieces of kindling and then some splints of soft wood. Soft wood logs like Pine, Spruce or Cedar, burn quickly and can be smokey, so using a small amount to ignite the fire and heat up the stove is perfect.

Once the soft wood logs are in full flame, then you can apply hard wood logs which will burn slower, give off minimal smoke, and produce a steady heat. Oak, Maple, Birch or Ash are all hardwood options that can be added slowly, once the first hard wood log has become well lit.

What is a seasoned log?

Seasoned logs need a moisture content below 20%. These can be identified by cracks in the end of the wood, they will fill lighter in weight and will sound hollow when tapped. Typically logs take 6 to 24 months to dry out and become seasoned, depending on their wood type i.e. soft wood or hard wood, and their natural environment. Logs should be stored in a cool dry place, where their moisture can naturally evaporate and ideally positioned in the sunshine, which can help to speed up the seasoning process, especially through the summer months.
