Planting, Protecting & Pruning!

Late autumn in the UK, is an ideal time to complete the last of the harvesting jobs and begin the tasks of planting, protecting and pruning trees, before the winter sets in.

Planting

New tree sapling

During November, hedging plants are available to buy at UK garden centres and are often a fairly cheap method for creating a border, giving structure to a garden design and providing a safe place for wildlife and small birds to nest.

Most trees and shrubs can potentially be trained into hedges with yearly pruning and maintenance. If you are looking to save on the cost, especially if you are buying several units, then go for bare-root specimens which are often cheaper than pot grown trees.

Furthermore, it is important to note that if you are buying trees and shrubs, that they should be planted out immediately so that they can get use to their conditions as promptly as possible.

Protecting

As the temperature is likely to drop over the coming months, November is also the perfect time to protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from the incoming colder weather.

Where there is no natural shelter or protection, a temporary wind break made of netting is an excellent choice, as it will let in the light and allow the plant to breathe. Alternatively, plastic covers are great for the sunlight; however they can trap and freeze condensation which can harm your plant or cause rot.

Pruning

These months are known as the ‘dormant season’ which is perfect for pruning trees, shrubs and hedges. The dormant season is when they are effectively asleep and not undergoing any growth stages. Pruning is easier to carry out during this time, as many of the leaves are falling and so the skeleton shape of the tree becomes far easier to define. Some trees do have an exception to this pruning rule as ornamental fruit trees such as cherry, plums and almonds can be susceptible to silver leaf (a fungal disease which causes leaves to turn silver and branches to die off) if pruned during the autumn. Secondly, Evergreen trees are better pruned during early spring.

Landscaper's To-Do-List

A Landscaper’s Autumn To Do List

The month of September can easily fill up the to-do-list for commercial landscapers and keen gardeners across the Surrey region.

Landscaper's To-Do-List

With Autumn just around the corner, it’s not long before the leaves will begin to fall, and so September is often a month for outdoor housekeeping. From raking up those first fallen leaves to tidying flower beads, cutting back conifers and planning spring bulb planting, there is plenty to keep groundsmen busy through the Autumn / Winter season.

It’s also a great opportunity to begin planning larger jobs, such as pruning trees and shrubs, which are best completed throughout the Winter season and once the leaves have fallen. Without their leaves, the true shape of the tree can be assessed to determine where best to cut back.

And, don’t forget! The best assistant for this type of job is an arboriculturist as they are qualified in cutting and pruning trees and will know where, when, and how much to cut back, based on the tree species.

It’s also essential to check if there are any trees which have a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) assigned to them, as these will not be able to be without planning permission. You can find out more about TPOs by contacting your local council for further details.

Finally, did you know that City Suburban Tree Surgeons Recycling accept brash, and logs from commercial landscapers and garden maintenance businesses across Surrey and the Greater London area? If you are a commercial landscaper who needs a facility to dispose of natural waste, then we are here to help. With several years of experience in natural waste management disposal and provision to off load natural garden waste by tipper / lorry directly at our site, we are here to support your business.

Achieving the perfect finish when landscaping your garden

Where to start when landscaping your garden

The thought of landscaping your garden, might feel like a colossal task, yet actually if you break down the area into zones you can start to build a beautiful aesthetically pleasing space, which is full of colour and texture.

To help to envisage the space, here are some considerations to make before you start!

Landscaping your garden what to look out for?

So, what should you consider when landscaping your Surrey Garden?

  1. Start by working out the position of the sun and understand how the light and the shade moves around the space. Are their areas which catch the light in the morning or in the evening? Are there areas where it could stay in full sun or shade? By understanding the movement of the light and shade, will not only help you with deciding on positions of seating, but also planting and the types of shrubs you can grow according to their light / shade tolerance.
  2. Think about the space and what you would like to use it for. Would you like somewhere to spend time sitting and relaxing on an evening? Would you like to include a water feature? Are you considering growing some vegetables or do you need extra space for storage? Deciding on how to use the space according to your likes and dislikes will help you to achieve the best design for the area and maximise the most use.
  3. Is there anything which you would like to screen off? Perhaps a neighbour’s view into your garden or an unsightly fence. Thinking about how you can include trees and larger shrubs as a backdrop could help to create privacy and improve the look and feel of the space.
  4. Finally, how much time do you think that you’ll have to maintain the garden? If you are a keen gardener, then over time you’ll enjoy pottering and tweaking with the shape and feel of the planting. If you are not so keen, then going for a low maintenance layout will prove to be a better choice in the long term.

Looking For Alternative Options To Peat-Free Compost?

UK peatlands provide valuable eco-systems and so it is important that we utilise alternative methods for growing flowers and crops.

Adding compost to your flower and vegetable beds can hugely benefit the soil quality, however finding good quality peat-free compost can be tricky.

We have learnt over recent years, that our UK peatlands provide valuable eco-systems and can significantly reduce carbon dioxide. Subsequently, there is a keen interest to find alternative solutions, so that we may preserve such a valuable natural resource.

Alternatively, by using a locally sourced peat-free compost like naturally decomposed organic compost, supplied by City Suburban Tree Surgeons Recycling, can make a huge difference to your soil quality and the growth of your plants.

Not only does organic compost improve soil conditions by adding essential nutrients, it improves soil structure by promoting better root development, aeration, and drainage. Furthermore, it also helps to retain water within the natural material, which can help plants to survive during tough draught conditions.

Tree Pruning & Managing Natural Waste

Read our insights on tree pruning and how to manage your natural waste.

When is the best time to prune your trees?

Once the leaves fall during autumn, and then before the new blooms emerge on the tree during mid to late spring. Throughout autumn, winter and into spring is the best time of year to prune, as trees often pause in a dormant state and halt growth during this time.

Also, when the trees are not in full leaf, it provides the arboriculturist, the opportunity to observe the tree clearly, it’s structural state and to determine where branches can be cut or trimmed back.

By pruning during the dormant season, the process promotes healthy growth, whilst also halting any extra unwanted growth. Trees can be tidied and shaped and any likelihood of branches causing accidental damage can be removed. It also provides an important opportunity to manage disease and to protect the tree from any further damage.

How often should trees be pruned?

Trees tend to be pruned on a 3 – 5 year cycle or once their growth has optimised again. However, their pruning schedule can depend individually on the type of tree, its age, and state of health.

How can you manage the waste?

For any arboriculturist or tree surgeon working in the Southeast UK, Surrey based City Suburban Tree Surgeons Recycling are here to take arisings directly off your hands.
