Seasoning logs for BBQ’s, Pizza Ovens, Outdoor Fires and Winter Stoves

So, you’ve had those trees thinned out and re-shaped, or even cut down, by a professional tree surgeon and now your garden feels lighter and refreshed for the summer months ahead, but what can you do with all of the logs?

There are many options! One is to keep the cut logs for your own use, or you could take them to a green waste recycling centre like City Suburban Tree Surgeons Recycling based in Croydon, Surrey.

Using logs for your own use

If you are thinking about keeping the cut logs for your own purpose, they can come into good use for BBQ’s, Pizza Ovens, Outdoor Fires and Winter Stoves. Afterall there is nothing better than tasting food from a wood burning stove or cosying up around a warm fire into the evening hours.

To create the best environment for cooking or keeping warm, the cut logs should be seasoned before using. By seasoning the logs, you are essentially drying out the logs and letting the sap evaporate, so that they won’t create excessive smoke when burning and ultimately they will burn for longer.

Seasoning logs process

  • Seasoning logs isn’t a quick process! It takes time for the cut logs to dry out (ideally 12 months).
  • To season the logs, first cut the branches and tree stumps into smaller sizes, for which you can handle and into proportions that will fit into your stove.
  • Next, designate an area of the garden or outside space, where you can stack the logs. Ideally if you can find a space which gets the sunshine, as the heat from the sun will naturally help with the drying process.
  • Stack them in an orderly manner – you might also want to create column stacks with different sizes and separate the hardwood from softwood, all to create easy access for later and when you need to choose them for your activity.
  • Finally, cover the top of the cut logs over with a frame and roof, or polythene cover to stop the rain infiltrating from above and to allow maximum drying capability.

And that’s it! Next year you’ll have great logs which will smell fabulous and won’t excessively smoke, for summer BBQs with friends and family or fires which will keep your warm, well into the winter.
